How to become a member of SALOS

SALOS has a number of different membership categories, including: Playing Members, Associate Members, Life Members and Patrons.

Playing Members

Playing members make up the performers that you see in our productions.  Generally, we hold auditions in the spring before rehearsals for the main show at the Wyvern start, and also in November, before we start our winter/spring programme of concerts or workshops.

We have an audition process where we ask applicants to perform a song of their choice from a musical; the song should be performed from memory and should be interpreted to include any movement considered appropriate. Applicants should choose a song which allows them to demonstrate their full singing capability, rather than choosing one which is sung/spoken.

We ask for a copy of the sheet music to be sent to our accompanist a couple of weeks before the audition; if you find it hard to find sheet music or think of a song, then please contact us and we can support you with ideas and copies of music.

Although we do not expect all our playing members to be able to dance, our shows involve a certain amount of choreographed movement, so you will therefore be asked to learn a short piece of movement at the audition, which you will perform in a group with other auditionees.

There is a very small 'audition panel' who normally comprise of the Chorus Mistress, Production Director and a representative from our playing membership.  All the audition panel have taken part in auditions themselves, both to join the society or for principal roles in productions, so they are aware that auditions can be a nerve-racking experience and they make an allowance for this.  We also try and make the process as relaxed and informal as possible; there will be other SALOS members around at the time of the audition who can chat to you with more information about the society, or perhaps just make you a cup of tea!

If you wish to apply for playing membership of the society, please complete an application form which can be found at the bottom of this page, and return it either by email or post to:
